Mainstream and extended support ended on 14 April 2009 and 8 April 2014 respectively. It is one of Microsoft's longest-lasting operating systems, with almost 13 years of support (both mainstream and extended) and still runs on 0.32% of computers worldwide as of May 2023. It was ultimately succeeded by Windows Vista in 2006 after several delays in its development, although many users opted to stay with Windows XP due to Vista's higher system requirements and initial instability.
It is the first consumer version based on the Windows NT codebase, succeeding both the NT-based Windows 2000 Professional and the 9x-based Windows Me.
It was released to manufacturing on 24 August 2001 and later made generally available on 25 October 2001. Windows XP, codenamed Whistler, is an operating system developed by Microsoft.
